    Editorial: Campylobacter-associated food safety

    Introduction: Campylobacteriosis is an enteric bacterial zoonotic infection caused by members of the Campylobacter genus (Kirkpatrick and Tribble, 2011). C. jejuni (> 85%) and C. coli (5–10%) are the most common species associated with the disease (Patrick et al., 2018). Ingestion of as few as 500 bacteria can cause campylobacteriosis (Robinson, 1981). Although Campylobacter typically causes self-limiting human gastroenteritis, it can lead to prolonged post-infectious complications, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, reactive arthritis, and/or post infectious-irritable bowel syndrome (Rees et al., 1995). The treatment of campylobacteriosis poses significant economic burdens worldwide, resulting in 1.56billioninhealthcarecostsintheUSA,1.56 billion in healthcare costs in the USA, 80 million in Canada, and €2.4 billion in the European Union per year (Devleesschauwer et al., 2017). The high prevalence of Campylobacter in the agri-food system is likely a major contributing factor to the incidence of campylobacteriosis. Due to its microaerobic nature, Campylobacter can colonize the intestinal tract of food-producing animals such as poultry, cattle, sheep, and swine (Hansson et al., 2018). However, it can also survive under aerobic conditions and infect humans through the food supply chain by forming biofilms or entering the viable but non-culturable state (Lv et al., 2019; Ma et al., 2022). The main route of infection has been identified as the consumption of contaminated food commodities, such as unpasteurized dairy products, undercooked poultry meat and/or contaminated water (Silva et al., 2011). Therefore, detection, characterization, and reduction of Campylobacter in the agroecosystem are of great importance. This mini-review provides an overview of the current trends in understanding Campylobacter and its interaction with the agroecosystem. We first introduce the improved methods to detect Campylobacter in various agri-food settings. Then, the prevalence of this microbe in the agri-food system as well as its characteristics are summarized. Finally, novel control strategies of Campylobacter are summarized and discussed

    Effects of Xinwei granule on expression levels of cyclin D1 and its upstream genes in gastric intraepithelial neoplasia tissues

    Purpose: To explore the effects of Xinwei granule (XWG) on low-grade gastric intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) and the underlying mechanisms. Methods: To establish LGIN model, Wistar rats were treated with N-methyl-N'-nitrosoguanidine for 3 months. LGIN model rats were randomly grouped into five groups (n = 15), viz, negative control (NC), normal saline (NS) group, Xinwei granule (XWG) group, Weifuchun tablet (WFCT) group, and vatacoenayme tablet (VT) group. Normal rats (n = 17) served as negative control. Histological evaluation of gastric mucosa was undertaken using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot, and immunohistochemical assays were performed to determine mRNA expressions, protein expression, and the distribution of cyclin D1, kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4), and p21-WAF1-CIP1, respectively. Results: Compared with LGIN group, the body weight of the rats increased in XWG, WFCT, and VT groups. The pathological characteristics of LGIN group were alleviated by XWG, WFCT and VT treatments. The positive expression of cyclin D1 was enhanced in LGIN group, but reduced in XWG, WFCT and VT groups. The expression levels of KLF4 and p21-WAF1-CIP1, upstream regulators of cyclin D1 reduced in LGIN groups. However, administration of XWG, WFCT and VT strengthened the expressions of KLF4 and p21-WAF1-CIP1. More importantly, the protective effects of XWG against LGIN were superior to those of WFCT and VT. Conclusion: Xinwei granules alleviate LGIN in vivo by inhibiting cyclin D1 expression and enhancing KLF4 and p21-WAF1-CIP1 expression

    Three dimension high definition manometry evaluated postoperative anal canal functions in children with congenital anorectal malformations

    BackgroundWe aimed to evaluate the function of the reconstructed anal canal in postoperative anorectal malformations (ARMs) patients through three dimension (3D) high-definition anorectal manometry.MethodsFrom January 2015 to December 2019, 3D manometry was performed as a postoperative functional assessment of patients with ARMs divided into age subgroups based on the time of manometry. Manometric parameters, such as the length of the anorectal high-pressure zone (HPZ-length), the mean resting and squeeze pressure of HPZ (HPZ-rest and HPZ-sqze), recto-anal inhibitory reflex (RAIR), and strength distribution of the anal canal, were collected and compared with age-matched controls. Their functional outcomes were analyzed with SPSS 23.0 software for statistical analysis.Results171 manometric measurements were performed on 142 postoperative patients (3 months∼15 years). The HPZ-rest in all patients was significantly lower than in age-matched controls (p < 0.05). HPZ-sqze was notably decreased in patients older than 4 years, whereas other age groups were comparable to controls (p < 0.05). The proportions of asymmetric strength distribution and negative RAIR were higher in ARMs patients. The type of anorectal malformations and lower HPZ-rest were the impact factors affecting postoperative functional outcomes.ConclusionsThe majority of the ARMs patients had acceptable functional outcomes. 3D manometry can objectively assess the reconstructed anal canal function. The patients with fecal incontinence had a high proportion of extremely low HPZ-rest and HPZ-sqze, negative RAIR, and asymmetric strength distribution. The manometric details will help the clinicians explore the causes of defecation complications and guide further management

    Photocatalytic degradation investigation of dicofol

    Photocatalytic degradation of dicofol was investigated on TiO2 nano particles (TiO2-NPs) under UV light irradiation. It was shown that dicofol could be completely degraded into inorganic chloride ion under the condition of 0.25 mg/mL TiO2-NPs, 2 h irradiation of 400 W high pressure mercury lamp with a wavelength of 365 nm and air at a rate of 100 mL/min. The effects of the experimental conditions, including the amount of TiO2-NPs, irradiation time and the intensity of light, were studied. The apparent photodegradation rate constant was 0.167/min under the optimal condition. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism of dicofol was also discussed
